The Philadelphia Flyers are facing a tough decision as they head into a potential rebuild. The timeline for this rebuild is uncertain, but one thing is clear: the team needs to move on from some of their key players in order to properly rebuild and give their younger players the opportunity to develop. While there is much to discuss regarding the team's forwards, let's focus on the defensemen that the Flyers will likely need to trade in order to move things forward.

One of the more recent additions to the Flyers' defense was Ryan Ellis, who was brought in before the 2021-22 season with hopes of improving the team's defense. However, Ellis has only played four games over the past two seasons, and his future with the team is uncertain. With four years left on his contract at a $6.25 million AAV, it may be difficult for the Flyers to move him, especially if other teams are concerned about his health. It's possible that the Flyers may need to eat some of Ellis' salary in order to make a trade happen.
Tony DeAngelo was another defenseman that the Flyers brought in recently to try to push the team towards the playoffs. However, it quickly became clear that the team needed more than just DeAngelo to make a real push. While DeAngelo led the team's defense in scoring, he is typically used on the third pair and doesn't have a great working relationship with head coach John Tortorella. With one year left on his deal at $5 million, DeAngelo should be easy to move due to his consistent offensive production and short-term contract.
Finally, Ivan Provorov has been the subject of trade rumors for some time now. While he has had some strong seasons in the past, his performance has suffered along with the rest of the team's struggles. It's clear that Provorov is a top-four defenseman, but he would benefit greatly from being paired with a more experienced defender, as he was with Matt Niskanen and Ryan Ellis. The Flyers may need to eat some of Provorov's contract in order to move him, but it's likely that there will be plenty of interest from other teams.
