The Quebec Major Junior Hockey League (QMJHL) has announced that fighting will be banned in the league.

A writer for The Athletic used the announcement to call out former Philadelphia Flyers enforcer Riley Cote for his cheap shots, which can cause serious head trauma, a bigger issue than fighting. The writer pointed out that one person is literally in a wheelchair as a result of a QMJHL fight, and 16-20 year olds are at a greater risk for head trauma. Cote, along with former NHL enforcer George Laraque, has been advocating for accountability and an end to cheap shots in the sport.
The ban on fighting in the QMJHL is a step towards creating a safer environment for young hockey players.
