Hayes would be traded to the St. Louis Blues for less than fair market value.
During the interview with Hayes on the Cam and Strick Podcast, the topic turned to Tortorella and Hayes.
In Hayes' words, Tortorella and Hayes did not see eye to eye. Throughout Hayes' career, he was on the Penalty Kill, until Tortorella came to town, so it seemed he didn't like Tortorella's game.
«I picked up the message that was sent months ago,» he said. «I don't want to say I'm suited for a contender, because I think I'm suited for anyone to be honest.»

In light of Briere's new youth movement, Hayes acknowledged months before being dealt that he was the odd one out.
It looked like Hayes and Torts' relationship had boiled over, but it appears they maintained a cordial relationship off-ice despite the press.
