Hockey Insider Elliotte Friedman Reveals A Blockbuster Trade That Fell Apart

This NHL off-season has been unpredictable with signings and trades, including the blockbuster deal between the the Calgary Flames and Florida Panthers that sent Matthew Tkachuk to Panthers in exchange for Jonathan Huberdeau, Mackenzie Weegar, prospect Cole Schwindt, and a 2025 first round draft pick.

However, there was recently another monster trade that was in the works that didn't come to futition revealed by Sportsnet's Hockey Insider Elliotte Friedman.

Friedman would discuss on his 32 Thoughts Podcast that Montreal Canadiens General Manager Kent Hughes, who's been very active this off-season trying to rebuild the Organization after a disastrous season. Friedman would share Hughes tried to make almost managed to pull a very inventive trade, one that involved former free agent defenseman John Klingberg.

According to Friedman, earlier this summer, the Canadiens and the Oilers had a deal in place in which Montreal would have signed Klingberg to a one-year contract as a free agent before trading him to Edmonton with 50 percent of his salary withheld in return for compensation. It would have been a first in NHL history for a team to sign an unrestricted free agent and then immediately trade him.

The compensation in question could have been forward Jesse Puljujarvi though Friedman could not confirm this details. Klingberg ended up signing one-year contract worth $7 million with the Anaheim Ducks.
