Another black mark on Ron Hextall's name is related to Ivan Fedotov, who has been causing a lot of problems lately.

Despite being subject to IIHF sanctions, the 6'8", 203lb goalie has been ignoring them, along with the KHL.
With a 14-10-2 record and a 2.00GAA and .919 SV%, he is CSKA Moscow's starting goalie in the world's second-best hockey league.
In May 2022, Fedotov will sign an entry-level contract worth $1.1 million for two years. Then, when it came to the Ukraine war, he would be detained for evading his draft obligations to Russia. In order to allow Fedotov to play in North America, his contract was later tolled due to the circumstances in Russia.

In accordance with Article II.4.1 of the IIHF International Transfer Regulations, Ivan Fedotov was given two (2) weeks to either go back to his former club (i.e Philadelphia Flyers Hockey Club); or obtain a release from his former club. As neither action occurred within the given period, the IIHF has imposed the following sporting sanctions on Ivan Fedotov:

- A four (4) month suspension on playing in official national and international games during playing periods. The suspension shall take effect on 1 September 2023 (first CSKA regular season game) and conclude on 31 December 2023.

As a result, the IIHF has ruled in favor of the NHL and the Flyers, allowing the player to play in North America after having his contract tolled. Fedotov is not convinced that it is valid, nor is the KHL.
Due to his ignoring the ruling and playing for CSKA Moscow, he would be sanctioned as part of another attempt to force the KHL's hand. In his second start for the season for CSKA Moscow, Fedotov took a big step forward, winning 5-1.
Despite the IIHF's rules, Fedotov allowed just one goal on 13 shots and won his first match of 2023-2024.
In the present situation, there has been no formal announcement, but it appears that the KHL does not view the ruling as legitimate as it stands.
