When John Tortorella joined the Philadelphia Flyers organization, he explained repeatedly that his hockey system is a defensive one. For this season, the Flyers have learned to adapt to this style with some success. One such player has not and has paid the price.
Hayes has certainly not given Torts any reason to trust his defensive game, especially after his glaring error against the New Jersey Devils on December 15th. Hayes was given possession of the puck and did not execute properly in which two Devils players skated down the ice and had a scoring chance against Carter Hart. Hayes did not see any icetime after the second period and ever since.
With 9 goals and 20 assists for 29 points, Hayes has had a great offensive year so far. However, his - 12 is troubling for both the coach and the organization. Time will only tell if Hayes will regain the trust of his coach.
