Looking back, Chuck Fletcher had an abysmal summer last year

Chuck Fletcher will have only one choice this summer : make his team way better than this year to make the playoffs. Of course, there's other options out there, but he said multiple times that he wanted to do an "aggressive retool", so nothing except playoffs would be considered as failing for him, right?

The best way to make your team competitive for a decade is to rebuild. He doesn't want to do that. He'll live with the consequences of it if he fails.

Let's go back at last year. The Flyers finished the season without making the playoffs, after a great run in the bubble during the 2020 summer. The objective, after last season collapse, was to be back in the playoffs. And at the time, it was understandable to do everything in his power to bring back the organization where it belongs : the postseason.

But clearly, Fletcher did everything wrong, and that's why the Flyers are a bottom team in the league. Out of the 9 players that are under 45% ExGF (Expected Goals For), 7 of them were brought in during the most recent offseason. The worst 4 Flyers defensemen in terms of ExGA/60 (Expected Goals Against per 60 minutes) were all acquired during the 2021 offseason.

Basically, we had a recipe for disaster. Chuck Fletcher simply downgraded players in multiple areas of his roster.

Let's see if he can do better this summer...
