As a result of the Adam Johnson tragedy, players have paused and reflected on his legacy. Neckguards have become more popular, and it all started with TJ Oshie ordering five Tilo Turtlenecks from his apparel brand.

As long as players continue to wear neck-guards in droves, neck-guards will become commonplace.
Also,
Claude Giroux, a future Hall of Famer, has stated that he will wear a neck guard on ice.
At 35 years old, this will be Giroux's first time wearing a neck guard in his NHL career after playing 1100 games. Due to advancements in technology and the ability to make them more comfortable, other players are more likely to consider wearing them.
NHL players on the Winnipeg Jets today who took on the Arizona Coyotes were seen wearing neck guards as well:

With players like Giroux and Karlsson wearing them now, younger players will hopefully take note and learn from the veterans on the ice in order to protect themselves and their families in the future.
