The Buffalo Sabres vs. Toronto Maple Leafs Leafs game from last nightin particular, has drawn criticism for the Toronto Maple Leafs and the NHL. Fans think it was a manipulated decision, and Kevin Bieska, a former NHL player and current Hockey Night in Canada announcer, was not at all in favour of it.
In the midst of the Toronto Maple Leafs' penalty kill, winger
Mitch Marner nearly had a breakaway opportunity before passing the puck to defender Mark Giordano. Giordano seemed to have scored and the puck appeared to have passed the goal line, but there was a problem: the net had already been removed. Look at the "goal" that was initially waived off but was subsequently recognized as a good goal:

The problem with this goal is that it has consistently been declared a non-goal in situations like these, as it was last night until the Leafs disputed it. Whenever a club uses its coach's challenge, the call and judgment are made in Toronto.. where the Leafs were playing.
Kevin Bieska expressed his anger with the debate in the following:
''I don't like this,'' I understand what we're trying to do now with the net coming off... maybe I'm a traditionalist.''
''The net goes off which I get sucks and it's delay of game penalty... but like 6 minutes later Giordano gets a breakaway against an imaginary net and the puck goes in through the imaginary net? This is like my brothers in my grandparents basement playing mini-sticks."
"The puck goes in and doesn't hit the post because it's not there, so it goes through the imaginary post?" said Bieksa. "What are we doing here?"
Are the officials and coaches challenge deciders favouriting the Leafs??
