Back in 2017, when the Flyers took Nolan Patrick and Morgan Frost in the first round, the Colorado Avalanche selected Cale Makar with the 4th overall pick. A decision at the time, a young Nathan MacKinnon was perplexed at.

The Avalanche were in the middle of their rebuild and when the Avs' GM Joe Sakic picked Makar, MacKinnon said that he was unsure of the young defenceman, citing the Alberta Junior Hockey League as a main reason why.
"What' is this? Who did we just draft? He looks ok but these (AJHL) players are awful," said MacKinnon.

During his draft year in the AJHL, Makar posted 75 points in 54 games from the blueline.
Since then, Makar has become one of the best if not the best offensive defenceman this league has known, changing the game with his skating and offence.
One thing is sure; MacKinnon should probably never become an NHL scout or GM.
