In a non-surprising turn of events, Elliotte Friedman has reported that Jay O'Brien will not be signing with the Philadelphia Flyers. The forward was selected 19th overall by the team in the 2018 NHL Entry Draft and has spent the past three seasons playing for Boston University after transferring from Providence. He will choose to test the free agent agency.
Although it is unclear why O'Brien has decided not to sign with the Flyers, it is clear that the team will receive significant compensation for losing their top prospect. As part of the NHL's compensatory rules for unsigned first-round picks, the Flyers will be awarded a 2024 second-round draft pick which is very huge.
This news comes as a blow to the Flyers' organization, who had high hopes for O'Brien's future with the team. However, they can take solace in the fact that they will receive a valuable asset in return for their investment in the young forward.
