Comparing players, especially when it comes to salaries, is not always easy. Many fans believe that if a player makes the same money as another, especially in the same style, whether it's defence, forward, or goalie, they expect both players to be of the same calibre and style.
Considering he was coming off a $925,000 contract and had only played one season with the Senators, it's quite surprising that General Manager Pierre Dorion felt the need to lock him up long-term with such a short sample size.
Looking at his numbers, his best season was in 2019 when he played 82 games, scoring nine goals, providing 26 assists, and totaling 35 points. His contract has improved dramatically, and he has very similar numbers to Sanderson.
Sanheim currently carries a $6.25 million cap hit, with his contract ending in 2030-2031. Since both players will end their contracts around the same time, and unless Sanderson can break through the 35 to 45-point barrier, this deal feels like an overpayment by the Senators, especially considering the limited sample of play he's had.
