It's no secret to anyone in the Metropolitan Division that the Penguins are on the brink of entering another rebuilding phase. The core they have relied upon for well over a decade is aging and beginning to indicate that the window of opportunity is closing.

In the past couple of weeks, newly appointed General Manager Kyle Dubas, formerly of the Toronto Maple Leafs, attempted to prolong this competitive window by acquiring Erik Karlsson from the San Jose Sharks.
An emerging question revolves around the potential structure of Sidney Crosby's new deal, as he becomes eligible for a contract extension after this season concludes. The Penguins have been fortunate to have one of the best players globally, earning a modest $8.7 million annually, while many other players such as Auston Matthews, Connor McDavid, Leon Draisaitl, and Mitch Marner command well over $11,000,000 per season.
Given these considerations, would it be prudent for Dubas to contemplate trading Crosby as he nears the signing of his new deal? Crosby's value is currently at its peak, and at 36 years old, it's expected that his skills will soon start to decline, and the opportunity may slip away.

The rationale behind this potential trade stems from the fact that previous General Managers, including Jim Rutherford, have depleted the Penguins' pool of prospects and draft picks. Year after year, Rutherford and others traded away these assets in an attempt to maintain their competitive edge, despite the strategy ultimately proving unsuccessful.
Dubas has established a track record of unwavering loyalty to his players, sometimes to a fault. It can be surmised that if he were to announce Crosby's availability for trade, numerous teams would undoubtedly express interest, repeatedly inquiring about the potential cost.
While this remains speculative, it's always enjoyable to contemplate the possibilities that lie ahead.
