An exciting time for hockey fans when the trade deadline is on the horizon. Fans will pull out their general managers' chairs and hats and discuss what they feel would be best for their team going forward. This year's trade deadline has been no shortage of unbelievable trades happening across the entire league.
It appears that the Eastern Conference will be the group of teams that will be the strongest to compete for the Stanley Cup. Western teams such as the Chicago Blackhawks have been sending off their best players to recoup as much talent and draft picks as possible.
With Patrick Kane now in New York Ranger and the trade details now apparent, Flyers pundits are beginning to compare the Panthers - Flyers trade that was made last year with Claude Giroux.
Must read on FlyersInsider
A few people have felt that the Flyers received the better end of that deal in terms of return than the Chicago Blackhawks did for Patrick Kane. In the Giroux deal, the Flyers received budding star Owen Tippett, Florida's first-round draft pick in 2024 or 2025 and a third-round draft pick in 2023.
With the more complicated deal, the Chicago Blackhawks received a 2023 conditional second-round pick, a 2025 fourth-round pick and a minor league defenseman named Andy Welinski. the condition on the second-round choice is that the Rangers need to reach the Eastern Conference final which in turn turns it into a first-rounder.
To make the money work, Chicago retained 50% of Kane's salary and with the Arizona Coyotes involved they will retain the other 50% of his salary which means the Rangers only have a cap hit of 2.625 million dollars.
Based on comparing the two deals, I do feel that the Flyers did get the better of them because they have a guaranteed star in Owen Tippett and a first-round draft pick whether it's in 2024 or 2025. That will help the Flyers with their rebuilding process.
