One of the Pittsburgh Penguins' top-6 forwards will miss the start of the season due to surgery. Jake Guentzel had ankle surgery on August 2nd and will be evaluated again in 12 weeks.
Guentzel initially tried rehab, but ultimately required surgery after experiencing difficulty on the ice.
It is possible that Guentzel's injury is related to being hit by a blocked puck in March, which caused him to leave the game.
He subsequently withdrew from the World Championships and missed the Da Beauty League this summer.

Guentzel's expected recovery time is until October 25th, leaving the team without one of their key players.
Rickard Rakell may fill in during this time, although he typically plays in the middle-6 and not the top-6. Alex Nylander, Valterri Puustinen, and Drew O'Connor are also potential options, but none can fully replace Guentzel's production.
