In the 2017 NHL Entry Draft, Cates, a 23-year-old left winger born in Minnesota, was drafted in the fifth round, 137th overall. In 31 games, he has scored three goals and dished out eight assists for 11 points.
According to the Flyers, Cates is being groomed to become a center rather than a winger as his game develops. Both Fletcher and Tortorella are on the same page with this. Having him develop at the center position would make the Flyers' offense more versatile and dynamic.
He also seems to be adapting well to this transition. Tortorella's system preaches defense first, and Noah cates follow that philosophy. It will be interesting to see if he could become that centreman they're looking for.
