"The Philadelphia Flyers asked Bill Meltzer to give out some mid-season awards as the team enjoys their week off. The Flyers did not want candidates for their own postseason awards like the Bobbly Clarke or Barry Ashebee Trophies, but rather the NHL's awards for most valuable player, best defenseman, best defensive forward and top rookie.
Claude Giroux takes home the Flyers "Hart Trophy" for being the most valuable player of the first half. While Giroux, Sean Couturier and Jakub Voracek are all worth candidates, Giroux got the nod because of his willingness to move from center to wing for the greater good of the team.
The Flyers "Norris Trophy" goes to Ivan Provorov, who beat out Shayne Gostisbehere's rebound season so far. Meltzer reasons that while Gostisbehere is a game-changing defender, Provorov is the team's most complete blue-liner.
The "Selke Trophy" for being the team's best defensive forward goes to Couturier, and frankly that was a very easy choice. With Couturier leading the team in goals this season there is a very good chance he will finally get consideration for the actual Selke Trophy at the end of the year.
The Flyers had plenty of contenders for their "Calder Trophy," but Meltzer feels that defenseman Robert Hagg has been the top performing rookie so far this season. Hagg has been the only rookie to play in every game this season and has been one of the most dependable defensemen on the team this year.
Do you agree with these choices?
