"The Philadelphia Flyers rebounded nicely after Tuesday embarrassing loss at the New York Rangers by erasing a two goal, third period deficit, to beat the Toronto Maple Leafs in overtime.
The puck finally dropped on tonight's game at 8:08 p.m. (appropriate) after the Eric Lindros number retirement ceremony. Both teams came out with a face pace, but the game went to the first intermission knotted at zero with the Flyers holding a 9-8 advantage in shots.
The Leafs finally broke the scoreless tie at the 12:57 mark of the second period as Connor Brown was able to get in behind the Flyers defense and shoot the puck through the five-hole of Michal Neuvirth.
The lead was increased to 2-0 28 seconds later when Frederik Gauthier got to a loose puck in front of the net, off a couple of rebounds, and scored his first goal of the year. The replay showed that the Maple Leafs were very close to being offside, but Dave Hakstol elected not to challenge the play.
The Flyers had a major response in the third period and it started with Nolan Patrick's unassisted goal at the 1:33 mark. In the same motion, Patrick stole the puck from Mitch Marner and swept it past Frederik Andersen with his backhand for the third goal of his career.
Moments after the Flyers got on the board Jori Lehtera was hit with a questionable interference call. As bad as the penalty kill has been of late, they put together a shorthanded goal at 3:25 to tie the game. While on a 2-on-1 rush, Valtteri Filppula made a great saucer pass to Wayne Simmonds below the left circle where he blasted home a one-timer. Andrew MacDonald was credited with the secondary assist on Simmonds's 16th goal.
The game headed into overtime, but Sean Couturier need just 18 seconds to win the game as he finished off a 2-on-1 rush by one-timing a pass from Travis Konecny past Andersen for the game winner. Michal Neuvirth also assisted on Couturier's team high 26 goal of the season.
With the win, the Flyers are currently just one point behind the Pittsburgh Penguins for the final wild card spot in the Eastern Conference. The Pens are playing late on the West Coast tonight. "
