Now that the St. Louis Blues have hoisted the Stanley Cup, the NHL offseason is officially underway. Flyers general manager Chuck Fletcher opened up the race by shipping Radko Gudas off to Washington for Matt Niskanen. It's going to be really something to watch this summer when it comes to NHL defenseman as an elite blueliner has the opportunity to become a free agent.
Erik Karlsson will without a doubt touch Drew Doughty type numbers and could take home $11million a year. The San Jose Sharks are the only team that can sign Karlsson to eight years instead of seven, but they'll only be able to offer seven if they can't get a deal done before July 1st. The Athletic's Kevin Kurz who covers the Sharks spoke with reporters around the league to find out the chances Karlsson would take on each city. There's been some very small Karlsson to Philly chatter, however it might not be as strong with the acquisition of Niskanen. Regardless, the Flyers have been labeled as having a "slim chance". Here's the Flyers excerpt from The Athletic's piece. "I do believe the Flyers will have interest, considering their desire for a big, flashy add this summer and the perceived need for a top-pair quality right-handed defenseman to pair with Ivan Provorov. I'm just not sure Philadelphia is particularly high on Karlsson's list of potential destinations. But I imagine at the very least, GM Chuck Fletcher will throw his hat in the ring, and if Karlsson shows serious interest, all bets are off." Charlie O'Connor
