As the Philadelphia Flyers continue to feel the effects of the ongoing Carter Hart investigation, the backup goalie position is one the Flyers are in desperate need of, in order to keep number one goalie Samuel Ersson fresh as the Flyers move into the most important part of their season. After a less-than ideal showing on Sunday by Cal Petersen who gave up seven goals against the Pittsburgh Penguins, the Flyers find themselves weighing their options for the second goalie spot.
One name thrown around the discussion for the number two position is Flyers prospect Felix Sandstrom who has been waiting patiently in the wings with the Phantoms in Lehigh.
The 27-year-old goalie was a third round pick by the Flyers in 2015 and has spent his last four seasons in the AHL with the Phantoms after coming over from Sweden. This season with the Phantoms, Sandstrom has produced a winning record of 11-6-2 with an .882 save percentage and a 3.23 save percentage on the year.
After Cal Petersen struggled in Sunday's loss, Flyers head coach John Tortorella has not ruled out the possibility of giving Felix Sandstrom a shot in between the pipes as the season progresses.
"Torts doesn't rule out the possibility of a Sandstrom call-up, though Petersen is still here after his poor game on Sunday. Says that they'll have to use the backup 4 or 5 times the rest of the way, and those discussions are ongoing."
Sandstrom did start 20 games for the Flyers last season and although he struggled, garnering 20 games of experience could be a great learning experience for Sandstrom and he could have an opportunity to bounce back from 2022.
Should the Flyers explore the possibility of calling up Sandstrom or should they stick with Petersen.
