22 Years Ago Today: Tie Domi And a Flyers Fan Exchange Blows in The Penalty Box
On March 29th, 2001, during a game between the Toronto Maple Leafs and the Philadelphia Flyers, an incident occurred that would go down in Philadelphia sports history as one of the most infamous moments. A Flyers fan, who was taunting Maple Leafs player Tie Domi while he was in the penalty box, was sprayed with water by Domi. The situation escalated when the fan approached and leaned on the glass of the penalty box, which unexpectedly gave way just seconds later, leading to a physical altercation between Domi and the fan. This incident remains a controversial and talked-about moment in sports history.
"I was kind of just holding him for a second and then he started throwing punches at Kevin Collins, the linesman," Domi explained Thursday on the 94WIP Morning Show. "That's when I started throwing a few punches and unfortunately I caught him, but he was a good guy. We straightened it all out and I lay it out in the book [Shift Work] pretty clear, how I handle it instead of letting lawyers handle it."
