During the 2019-2020 NHL season, German Rubtsov made his debut in the league, playing four games but failing to score before being sent down to the Lehigh Valley Phantoms. Unfortunately, he struggled in the AHL, managing only two goals and thirteen points in forty-two games.
The Flyers, however, remained invested in Rubtsov's future and decided to loan him back to the KHL during the 2020-2021 season.

He played for HK Sochi and later for SKA St. Petersburg, although the Flyers still held his rights.
In 2022, Rubtsov was part of a trade with the Florida Panthers, along with Claude Giroux, Connor Bunnaman, and a draft pick, in exchange for Owen Tippett. However, the Panthers did not extend a qualifying offer to Rubtsov, prompting him to return to the KHL and sign with Spartak on a two-year deal.
While not all KHL players are able to transition to the NHL, the Flyers continue to support Rubtsov and his development as a player.
