Cam Atkinson was expected to be healthy for the Flyers' opening night, but like many things Chuck Fletcher has stated, it was all false. Atkinson has missed 32 games, and just started practicing over fourteen days ago since last year, just over one week after practicing the Flyers announced Atkinson would be placed on the teams injury reserve.

The timeline and reports made on Atkinson's injury, as well as how hard the Flyers tried to keep his injury a secret, they finally revealed it after announcing he will miss the remainder of the year..
Atkinson suffered a serious neck injury and will require surgery on it, which will sideline him for several months, and a lot of time before rehabbing.

This is very much like the Couturier and Ellis information, Chuck Fletcher and the Flyers medial staff seemed to speak too soon with their reports, which were confirmed completely false on each of the three (Atkinson, Ellis and Coots).
A huge piece of information revealed by Atkinson's doctor seems like it is very similar to Ryan Ellis, they may never play again.
''You might be able to come back and play if you continue rehab, but you've got to look at the bigger picture, the nerve irritation in your arm''.
There seems to be doubt that the 33-year old veteran may return to hockey, and it may be a smart decision as a whole to choose not to return and prioritize health over hockey, as he has a wife and two kids waiting for him at home.
Fletcher on Atkinson: "When he spoke with this last doctor, I think the doctor kind of laid it out that, you might be able to come back and play if you continue to rehab. But you've got to look at the bigger picture here, in terms of nerve irritation in your arm." (1/2)

"If you want to get back to 100 percent for the long term, you need to do this. I think that really resonated with him. And again, this is after weeks and weeks of trying to come back. He made the right decision for him." (2/2)
