It wasn't an easy year for Columbus Blue Jackets' goaltender Elvis Merzlikins. His best friend and former teammate Matiss Kivlenieks died in a fireworks accident last summer and Merzlikins told a little bit more about how he felt this year.

"I'm gonna be honest, for the opening night, I didn't have time (to prepare) (...) We all know what happened to him. When I heard the cannon, I felt my heart. I never heard in my life my heart beating that alive. That was a really weird feeling, what I had (...) I'm gonna be honest even when we scored goals, I was always closing my eyes and getting myself ready. I think that's just the trauma, but it went away. Obviously, now when I hear the cannon, I'm happy. But that was the feeling I had in the start of the season," said Merzlikins.

Merzlikins also said that for some games, he was in front of his goal but couldn't care less because he was thinking so much about his friend.
This season, Merzlikins registered a 27-23-7 record, a 3.22 GAA and a .907 save percentage.
