The Vegas Golden Knights are in a salary cap hell. They had a lot of injuries since the start of the season, so they took advantage of the LTIR loophole. However, the story isn't the same anymore.
They tried to trade Evgenii Dadonov and get rid of his $5M (per year) salary to the Ducks but the player had Anaheim on his no trade list. At one point in the season, they will have to clear players like
Mark Stone and Max Pacioretty out of the Injury Reserve, but they can't because they just don't have enough cap space.
They put Reilly Smith on LTIR recently, which allowed them to activate defenseman Alec Martinez. But still, the Golden Knights are in big trouble. And without a doubt, they are looking to move some pieces to create some breathing room under their cap. And that's when Chuck Fletcher has to take advantage of it.

For your information, GM's can still make trades after the deadline. With that being said, the player who has been dealt can't neither play during the rest of the regular season or the playoffs with his new team.
The Golden Knights are fighting for their lives right now, and need their most important players back as soon as possible. The Flyers have $11.6M of space under their cap so they can allow to take a big contract. Also, it could permit Fletcher to acquire some very interesting assets if he agrees to take back a big contract.
It could be a "win-win" situation for both sides. Of course, it's going to be extremely difficult for both sides to find an agreement to make a trade until the end of the regular season, but Fletcher has to call the Golden Knights to find out if something could work.
