The NHL trade deadline always provides a captivating time for watching and reading about the latest developments. Thanks to the Internet and social media, fans of the game now have the opportunity to learn about potential deals and trades that might have gone unnoticed 15 years ago. Some trades hinge on a trade call gone awry or a sudden change of heart by a general manager.

The Colorado Avalanche were particularly confident about securing former Flyers superstar Claude Giroux. The veteran Flyer, who was traded to the Florida Panthers in pursuit of a Stanley Cup victory, came tantalizingly close to joining the Avalanche during that same deadline.
Their confidence was so unwavering that they went ahead and created jerseys in advance. These jerseys, which have now become collectible items, have recently been put up for auction to support KS charities.

When the Flyers sent Giroux to the Panthers, they included a 2024 fifth-round draft pick, Connor Butterman, and German Rubtsov. In return, they acquired winger Owen Tippett, a 2024 first-round pick, and a 2023 third-round pick.
However, Giroux's tenure with the Panthers lasted just a quarter of a season and a single playoff run. Subsequently, he signed with the Ottawa Senators as an unrestricted free agent during that summer.
After dedicating fifteen seasons to the Flyers, Giroux amassed impressive stats: he played 1100 games, scored 329 goals, provided 673 assists, totalling 1002 points, and accrued 452 penalty minutes.
Given his remarkable track record, it's not hard to understand why the Avalanche would have been eager to have him join their roster.
