The Toronto Maple Leafs recently played against their former general manager, Kyle Dubas, now with the Pittsburgh Penguins. This prompted reflections on Dubas' time in Toronto after his unexpected firing last summer by Maple Leafs President Brendan Shanahan.
During the game's broadcast on Hockey Night in Canada, the panel praised Dubas for his leadership with the Maple Leafs, but not everyone agrees. On his podcast, veteran NHL analyst Don Cherry criticized his former colleagues for praising Dubas while being critical of his performance.
"I don't think he did a good job," said Cherry. "I don't understand. The salary cap... he maxed that out, he didn't get by the second round, I just don't think he did a good job."
Cherry questioned the sincerity of the praise, suggesting the panel may be diplomatic in their public comments.
"They are gonna meet Dubas in the hall, what are they gonna do, say something bad about him?" asked Cherry.
While Dubas has received acclaim from many, Cherry stands firm in his differing opinion, emphasizing his belief that Dubas' tenure was not as successful as some might suggest.
