Flyers Centre expressed the desire to stay with Philadelphia.
Now that this terrible season is just about over, the Flyers organization will begin the process of sifting through the rubble and see who will remain with the team going forward or who can be moved.
During a rebuilding phase, nothing is off the table as the general manager needs to purge his team of contracts for assets also stripping the team down to the studs and starting over.
Interim general manager Danny Briere has stated that he doesn't intend to do this, however, there is little doubt in my mind that he will have to take this team in that direction to get things right and to do this rebuild properly.
One such player has expressed his desire to stay with Philadelphia. Beleaguered Flyers centerman
Kevin Hayes has certainly had an up-and-down season with Head Coach John Tortorella.
Must read on FlyersInsider
Hayes showed Tortorella that he can score and provide the offence his team needed, but also showed him his poor defensive play and mental mistakes that cost the team several goals and games at times.
According to CapFriendly, Hayes has entered the middle frame of his seven-year $50 million contract signed by the Flyers and now has a modified no-trade clause rather than a no-movement clause. That means he has an option to submit a 12-team no-trade list to Briere going forward.
At a $7.142 million cap hit for the next three years after this season, Briere will likely look to move Hayes to another team if a buyer is willing to take on his full salary. Granted it's difficult to do but to do the rebuild properly, all dollars are needed to bring in new stars as they are drafted and need their contracts satisfied.
Time will tell if this will happen. I also feel it needs to happen as this team needs to go in a completely different direction to be competitive in the 21st-century NHL.
