With the arrival of the NHL regular season, comes the release of EA's annual Hockey Game, NHL '24.
NHL '24's Updates and System Rankings
There have been major changes in the title with the EASHL battle pass and moments in Ultimate Hockey Team. The Flyers' updated uniforms will also be available in the game.
Approach With Caution
Must read on FlyersInsider
In addition to the team, players are also rated yearly, and many fans and insiders were upset about one superstar's rating recently.
My advice would be to approach the Flyers' ratings with caution!
In Travis Sanheim's case, his rating was based on past performances, since that is all EA had available at the time of the release. An overall score of 85 was earned by Sanheim. Despite the fact that Sanheim is by all means a top-four pairing defenseman, was it earned after last season? He was unable to be offloaded by the Flyers. Since Noah Hanifin has easily outscored Sanheim's point totals, it's interesting he and Hanifin shared the same rating.
Despite missing an entire season, Atkinson has an overall rating of 84. Alex Killorn put up 64 points last season, which isn't helping his cause, considering his age. Atkinson has not yet regained his 2018-2019 form.
In spite of his injury woes and being a cap dump, Sean Walker had an 81 overall rating. While Walker isn't a terrible defenseman, it's questionable if he's a top pairing defenseman, as the game suggests?
EA gave Felix Sandstrom a 78 rating, which is another NHLer rating that was given to a goalie who wasn't at his best last year. Alex Stalock had a .908 save percentage last year, but he didn't rate higher than Sandstrom, who tied for 81st place for save percentage.
The Underrated Flyers
Although Owen Tippett was an important part of the team's offense last year, he only earned an 82 rating. As he continued to develop in Philadelphia, he tallied 27 goals and proved to be a consistent offensive threat.
Noah Cates got an 82 overall rating, and it seems that EA has trouble rating defensive skills, which Cates was paired with players such as Eetu Loustarainen and Conor Sheary. His ranking last season in Selke Voting put those players to shame. It is time for Cates to be respected more.
At the beginning of the season, Nick Seeler received a 77 overall rating, which would've been fair for Seller. Nevertheless, he steadily improved his game. EA has him paired next to Filip Roos of the Blackhawks, a 17-game NHLer. It was a dirty job they did to Seeler.
While none of them are egregiously off, EA could use other methods and systems of ranking players, as it seems they're outdated.
