MacEwen, who was claimed off waivers from the Vancouver Canucks in 2021, has shown to be one of the key players the team is depending on to attempt to turn things around. Since the beginning of last season, he has participated in 121 games and earned 164 penalty minutes. Although he has only scored nine points this season, he doesn't provide much offensive production, but head coach John Tortorella has dramatically increased his ice time from the previous year.
Now playing more than 12 minutes each night on average, MacEwen has even participated in several power plays as the second unit's net front option. Given his lack of scoring, that is probably not going to happen on a contender. Tortorella, though, is attempting to establish a culture that values effortsomething MacEwen has never lacked.
Undrafted, he worked his way up the depth chart for the Canucks before making his professional debut in 201819. He now has 176 games under his belt and, when healthy, a regular position in the Flyers' lineup. This summer, he will enter RFA discussions with the hope of receiving a multi-year agreement. The 26-year-old has a cap hit of $925K and has one year before becoming an unrestricted free agent.
