It sure has not been an easy week for Chuck Fletcher. Of course, we can blame him for the deal involving Claude Giroux he made with the Panthers.

In fact, the return he got isn't as bad as some people think. When you compare the trades that other GM's made involving players that are the same calibre as Giroux, Fletcher did get an "okay" nice return.
Mark Stone was traded three years ago from Ottawa to Vegas for a 2nd round pick and prospect Erik Brannstrom. During the 2018 trade deadline, Paul Stastny was traded from St. Louis to Winnipeg for a 1st round pick, a 4th round pick and Erik Foley. Fletcher got a 1st round pick, a 3rd round pick and a decent prospect in Owen Tippett. When you take all of this into consideration, it's more understandable why Fletcher got what he got for his former captain...
With that being said, Fletcher was put in a difficult situation. Giroux only wanted to go to the Panthers and GM Bill Zito knew that he had the advantage in the negotiations. He gave Fletcher a very hard time, and according to Elliotte Friedman, the Flyers' management group was frustrated.

This also why it took longer than anyone expected.
"The conversations between Florida and Philadelphia weren't easy. Knowing they had the leverage, the Panthers grinded hard, which is why it took longer than anyone wanted or expected. The Flyers were frustrated, but ultimately decided to do what was right by Giroux," said Friedman in his 32 Thoughts.
