As NHL teams rise to the pinnacle of their team build, and go on prolonged playoff runs and eventually Stanley Cup wins, normally the accolades will fall on the head coach and the general manager of the team.

As all fans know the GM's job is to manage the money for the owner and to guide the teams' builders to produce a Stanley Cup winner.
The unsung heroes, however, are rarely mentioned in the media as the true builders of any NHL organization who happened to be the draft specialists and player development personnel. Their jobs are to find players that will fit the mold of the general manager's view and develop into the stars they hope they will be.
Tonight, the Flyers are playing the Columbus Blue Jackets in one of their final games of the year. Numerous media noticed a new face sitting in the management box of the Flyers who happens to be Mike O'Connell who is the player development senior advisor.
Must read on FlyersInsider
O'Connell is well known throughout the NHL management teams as a builder who has a long resume of great players he has helped draft and develop. He was responsible for the base development and drafting of the Boston Bruins 2011 Stanley Cup-winning team.
He has assisted Brent Flahr concerning the NHL draft and will continue that this year. Being such a deep draft and many generational players available, it will be vital that both O'Connell and Flahr take their time and choose wisely.
The Flyers now focused their attention on May 8th where they will learn where they have finished in the NHL draft lottery. One can only hope that they will land in the number one spot to land future superstar Connor Bedard.
