The PTO season is alive and well in the NHL, as many veteran NHL players continue to seek landing spots for their beleaguered careers, hoping to stay in the game.
This appears to be the case, as former Flyer Arten Anisimov has secured a new role with the Detroit Red Wings. The 35-year-old forward, who played 55 games for the Lehigh Valley Phantoms and scored 19 goals with 36 points, was signed today by the Red Wings on a PTO.
A PTO, or Professional Tryout Contract, allows teams to observe these players and determine if they still possess the skills necessary to play in the NHL and fit the team's needs. If the team believes he can make a difference, he will be signed to a new contract, typically for one year.
The six-foot, 490-pound center was drafted in the second round, 54th overall, by the New York Rangers in 2006. He has played for five NHL organizations, accumulating a total of 771 games played, 180 goals, 196 assists, 376 points, and 214 penalty minutes in his NHL career.
