NHL forward Akim Aliu went viral in 2020 when he accused the Calgary Flames Bill Peters for being a racist and using racial slurs against him when the two were on the Rockford Ice Hogs AHL team, Peters apologized for the words and resigned.
Aliu received support from 10's of NHL players of colour, including Nazem Kadri who also received hate during last years playoffs after a collision with Jordan Binnington, fans started attacking Kadri's race and family online.
Aliu has now been trending once again, this time for weighing in on the controversy surrounding Ivan Provorov of the Philadelphia Flyers, who refused to wear the Flyers pride jersey in warmups.
"When Colin Kaepernick takes a knee for social justice, John Tortorella says he will bench any player on his team that does the same. But now, Provorov «did nothing wrong» & as per usual, NHL's response is 🤷🏽♂️ At least pick a side. Is «Hockey for Everyone» or only when it suits you?"
