Hockey players, like anyone else in the workforce and professional sports, know that there will always be other players behind them who will push for a job.

Internal competition is always beneficial for a company or a professional sports team, such as the Philadelphia Flyers. The team has entered its second year as a rebuilding franchise, and during these crucial games, evaluations are constantly happening. The general manager and the head coach are looking for players who will emerge as potential new talents to bolster the roster.
When this happens, other players who have been on the team for several years need to take notice. This has been occurring with longtime Flyer Morgan Frost. Frost is in his fifth NHL season with the Flyers and has worked his way up from the Lehigh Valley Phantoms to the parent club to secure a new two-year, $4.2 million contract.
After those unusually long contract negotiations, it appears that Frost has fallen out of favour with head coach John Tortorella. Frost has not been high on his list since his arrival last season, and it seems that he continues not to favour him, as he has benched him for three straight games.

The standard line that has been coming from Tortorella is that Frost has not played poorly but not well enough compared to other players.
The Flyers have received several injections of talent in the past few games with the return of Sean Couturier, along with the signing of Ryan Poeling, who has given the Flyers' lines stability.
There's also a push from Phantoms players, such as Tyson Foerster and Bobby Brink. As both rookies are wingers and making a case for Tortorella to keep them long-term and become full-time Flyers, there could be a possibility they too could try the centre position to help with depth.
The path forward is simple for Frost; he will need to dig deeper and find a way to stand out, earn his position, and play harder. This is a good problem for the Flyers as their depth continues to grow, with more talent arriving in the next few years.
But for now, if Frost does not improve and remains out of the lineup throughout the season, the management team will likely look to move him to another organization to recoup assets and cap space.
