It seems that certain players in the NHL will attract higher criticism about their game than others. Some will be criticized for their size, while others will be criticized for their skating, and some will be criticized for their attitude.

Flyers' draft choice, Matvei Michkov, who was chosen 7th overall in this year's draft, has been a lightning rod of criticism from the country he hails from and its politics, to the idea of whether he will actually join the Flyers in three years when his contract ends with the KHL.
But one criticism that has come up has to do with his skating. According to numerous pundits and hockey experts, they feel that his skating ability is less than ideal and one of his biggest flaws. Charlie O'Connor, an insider for the Flyers, tweeted that he can't ignore this flaw; however, he feels that the player will be great nonetheless.

I feel that players need to be given a chance to prove that they can make changes to their game and address their issues with their mechanics.
Former Flyer James van Riemsdyk was notoriously known as one of the worst skaters out there, but after spending some time with Barb Underhill, a former Canadian figure skater who worked with the Toronto Maple Leafs as a skating coach, he turned his skating around, and he became quite proficient, especially with his turns and edges.
It's way too early to say whether this will hinder him as a player, and being so young, he will grow and develop. I also think he'll be just fine when he comes over to North America and will have an advantage over some of the players, being 21 years old and having had time to mature.
