The NHL proves time and time again why it is the toughest league in all of professional sports.

Since the Flames have been eliminated in Game 6 of the conference semi finals, it has been revealed that key defenceman Chris Tanev had been playing with a torn labrum, a separated shoulder and a sprained neck.
In medical terms, the labrum is essentially a cup-shaped rim of cartilage that lines and reinforces a ball-and-socket joint, such as the hip or shoulder. In Tanev's case due to his separeted shoulder, we can assume that is where his labrum was torn.

Tanev, 32, featured in all 82-regular season games while reaching a career high 6 goals and 22 assists.
Dhaliwal notes that Tanev is expected to have surgery for these injuries next week.
Tanev's gutsy performance and drive give shades of Patrice Bergeron playing with a punctured lung in 2013 and Shea Weber who basically played all last postseason without a functional thumb. An injury that would force him to unofficially retire from the NHL.
A prime example of why we love this sport. NHL players are just so tough!
