Many Flyers fans and players felt that John Tortorella's coaching style could benefit the team as it looked to improve when he was hired by Chuck Fletcher on June 17th, 2022.

As the year progressed, Fletcher made constant mistakes and missed opportunities during his leadership, which ultimately cost him his job. The Flyers appointed General Manager Danny Briere to a full-time role, and he believed that Tortorella was the right fit to continue with their rebuild.
One aspect of Tortorella's coaching style is accountability. Torts does not believe in the idea that players should be given ice time solely based on their performance, whether good or poor. According to him, every minute is earned, and players will receive praise and more ice time accordingly, while others will find themselves in his doghouse and on the bench until he sees improvement.
Despite this philosophy, recent moves have prompted some fans to question whether Tortorella is the right fit for the team. One notable issue is the scratching of Bobby Brink for two consecutive games, while Tyson Foerster, who has struggled since the beginning of the season, continues to sit on the top line with Coots and Atkinson.

Another concern is the handling of the Morgan Frost situation. Frost recently signed a new two-year deal worth $4.2 million, with an annual cap hit of $2.1 million. Tortorella decided to bench him for seven straight games, only allowing him to return due to injuries within the roster.
Tortorella explained to the media that Frost needed to increase his pace in the game, which would help him get back into the lineup. However, he also stated that Frost hadn't played poorly, confusing some people about whether he should be in the lineup or not.
It is widely expected that the Flyers will continue to experience uncertainty over the next few months as the rebuild enters the next phase.
To gather as many assets as possible in draft picks, Philadelphia should trade many top players at the deadline to teams contending for a Stanley Cup.
