In recent years, the Philadelphia Flyers have struggled to establish a distinct identity. When the Flyers formally signed John Tortorella as head coach, Tortorella commented on his lack of familiarity with the Flyers and acknowledged that the Flyers have struggled to establish a distinct identity.

Claims for negligence:
"How am I supposed to choose a captain when I know nothing about this place? I am unfamiliar with the majority of the players, and I will have to discover their identities."
When asked about Owen Tippett's performance, Torts stated that the player needs to find his own identity and become something. Whether that something is a power forward, a goal scorer, or a banger, "you need to be something," said Torts. Torts also stated the same thing about Zac MacEwen, who has recently found success with the Flyers after being traded from the Hurricanes.

There are only four teams in the NHL that do not have a captain, and Flyers head coach John Tortorella won't choose one until his teammates show that they want one. The absence of a captain is another thing the Flyers do not have but desperately need.
Torts has singled out one specific player who, in his opinion, merits a captaincy letter right now, whether it be a "A" or a "C," even though he might not name a captain anytime soon.
"I'm not sure anyone's ever ASKED him to be a leader,
John Tortorella said of Travis Konecny. Right now, if he brought a leadership group in, Konecny would be a part of that, although they're still a ways away from that.''.
