The Quebec Major Junior Hockey League (QMJHL) has confirmed a fighting ban for the 2023-24 season. QMJHL insiders, including Mikael Lalancette and Stephane Leroux, have announced the new rule, which includes an automatic game misconduct for fights, a one-game suspension for the instigator, and a two-game suspension for the aggressor.
This move follows a decline in fighting, with the QMJHL averaging 0.07 fights per game last season compared to 0.78 in 2011-12. Former NHL enforcer Enrico Ciccone has been instrumental in promoting the ban.
The impact on NHL prospects from the QMJHL, who haven't grown up with fighting as a significant part of their development, remains uncertain.
