On this day in hockey history the Pittsburgh Penguins would sign their first overall pick from the 2004 NHL Draft September 5th 2006.
Malkin would start his career off right scoring 33 goals, and 52 assists, for 85 points in 78 games to win the Calder Trophy.
Next season Malkin and the Penguins would make the Stanley Cup final for the first time since their 1992 Cup win over the Minnesota North Stars. Unfortunately, for Malkin and the Penguins they would lose in six games to the Detroit Red wings in the Cup final.

However Malkin and The Penguins would not be denied as they would battle all the way back to the Stanley Cup final in 2009 vs the Detroit Red wings again and this time they would come out on top winning the Stanley Cup and
Evgeni Malkin won the Conn Smythe Trophy.
On top of winning a Hart Trophy and a Art Ross Trophy also Malkin and the Penguins would go on to win the 2016 Stanley Cup vs the San Jose Sharks, and 2017 Stanley Cup vs the Nashville Predators making them back to back champions.
At 36 years old, Malkin has played in 981 games with Pittsburgh, scoring 444 goals, and 702 assists, for a total of 1,148 points.
Many thought Malkin's time in Pittsburgh was coming to a end as the 36 year-old was heading to free agency until a last minute deal with the Penguins signing four more years with the Penguins.
