There are times when NHL teams throw a curveball to their roster and fan base when they decide to play a player in a different role. Whether it's Mitch Marner on the penalty kill or Dustin Byfuglien on the offensive side, mostly there is no doubt what role players will be playing in their next game,

After the Edmonton game, Flyers defenseman Justin Braun was told that he would be playing on the 4th line wing in the next game. Before this Braun had no idea this was coming in and felt that if this move would give him more minutes and plain time with the team that he would be all for it.

The move certainly stunned the Flyers fanbase with many scratching their head as to why Head coach John Tortorella would do this. As Torts explains he felt that Flyers forward Kieffer Bellows did not give him a reason to keep him in the lineup and he wanted to try Braun at forward.
The 36-year-old defenseman, with his defensive skill set, could warrant a look on forward in this experiment. This will also give the Flyers a chance to showcase other teams that are looking for defensemen who can play forward away to have him traded to recoup some assets.
It remains to be seen if torts will keep Braun at forward, and for the time being with the team in flux waiting for the end of the trade deadline I suspect he'll be playing a few more games at this new position.
