In the second period of tonight's game between the Tampa Bay Lighting and the Toronto Maple Leafs, the fans at Rogers Arena jeered and yelled, baiting the referee into giving the Leafs a powerplay.
With around eleven minutes left to play in the second, Auston Matthews gets checked by Steven Stamkos behind the Tampa net. Matthews then falls and without having seen the play, the referee belatedly throws his arm up.
With the crowd rocking and yelling, the referee must've felt the pressure to make a call. But with a 2.5 second margin between the call and the play, its very suspect.
Refereeing this season hasn't been great. Let's hope shenanigans like these get resolved soon. For everybody's sake.
