When it comes to team building, especially in the NHL the rule of thumb is your AHL team will be better than your NHL team when you're in a rebuild or retooling phase. It would be quite the opposite when the NHL team is a contender which has been pulled from the AHL team for reinforcements.
This seems to be holding for the Flyers and their affiliate, The Lehigh Valley Phantoms. With the Flyers out of a playoff spot and announcing to the NHL that they will be in a full rebuilding phase starting this summer, The Phantoms have made the playoffs in the AHL and we'll take a run at the Calder Cup.
Last night, The Phantoms took game one against the Charlotte Checkers. They have entered a best-of-three series, and The Phantoms won four to three.
