What the Philadelphia Flyers have been able to do this year thus far has been nothing short of shocking with a mix of amazing. GM Danny Brière, in his first full year as GM, labeled this a rebuilding year. What do rebuilding years consist of? Losing streaks, empty stadiums, disgruntled/impatient fans (especially in the Philadelphia market), a place at the bottom of the standings, and selling off assets to highest bidder.
Instead, the Flyers find themselves in second place in a ridiculously tight race in the Metro Division. Only four points behind the once unstoppable, now struggling, New York Rangers. They have the second most points in the league since Nov 10th with 43. If you have been down Broad Street recently, you will see the Wells Fargo Center is anything but empty, it's rocking on a nightly basis in support of their team.
This brings us to the selling of assets. Brière must make some sensitive decisions; does he try to improve this team even more and go for the playoff spot and try to make a run? This team has bought into Tort's system, ands have not showed signs of slowing down. Or does he stick to his rebuilding plans and start to trade away some players, taking advantage of their value now and continue to build for the future. There is no definitive right answer, but according to Kevin Kurz of The Athletic, the plan of keeping the current team intact would make some of the talked about trade chips very happy.
