Vets Need To Play To Entice Them

It's no secret the Flyers are in the middle of a rebuild, so understandably, the fans want to see the kids play. If they made the team they should play, right? It's a bit more nuanced than that, though. It becomes a tricky line to walk for management and coaching staff. They can play the kids right off the bat and inadvertently shun the vets which could make the future more difficult when it comes to "rounding out" the team, or play the vets occasionally while sitting the kids even when the fans are screaming to see the kids.

The Flyers opening night lineup as it stands now is no doubt vet-heavy. Guys like Tyson Foerster and Emil Andrae have "made" the team, but it appears they will not play in the season opener. Instead, guys like Marc Staal and Ryan Poehling - free-agent veteran signings from this past off-season will get the call to open the season.
As of now, Egor Zamula is set to play. However, his spot may not be safe, either. If Rasmus Ristolainen, who is currently on a retroactive IR stint, can play tomorrow night, Zamula too may sit.
If the vets don't play now, the Flyers run the risk of vets not wanting to sign with the team in the future for fear they won't get to play.

It's important that the kids play, and they will get their chances, but the vets will always be there to push them. If they make too many mistakes, there's a good chance they'll find themselves watching from the pressbox while the vets attempt to show them how it's done.
It's a bit of sportsmanship amongst the team that is needed in order for a team to run smoothly and get the best out of certain players. Finding the balance that's needed to make it all work is the job of the Flyers management team and coaching staff.
As the 2023/24 season begins they're diving in head first to try to find that balance right off the bat.
