It was announced yesterday that the Calgary Flames and RFA Matthew Tkachuk will be heading into a club-elected arbitration regarding contract talks.

Tkachuk himself did not file for salary arbitration before last Sunday's deadline, meaning this was a team initiated move.
The reason the Flames seek arbitration is to buy themselves more time and to protect themselves from another team sending an offer sheet to their star.
Any offer between $8.4 million and $10.5 million would cost two first-round picks, two second-round picks and a third-rounder for a one-year rental.

Any offer of $10.5 million or more would cost the team four first-rounders.
A $6.3-million to $8.4-million deal would cost a team a first-, second- and third-rounder.
Tkachuk, 24, is fresh off a 3-year, $21 million deal signed back in 2016 and is coming off his career year, posting 42 goals and 104 points in 82 games this season.
The Flames will not lose him for nothing and intent to play the waiting game. Full details in the Sportsnet article below.
