On October 5th, 2020, Matt Niskanen announced that he was retiring from the NHL. The news came shortly after the Philadelphia Flyers Playoffs in the bubble.
It seemed very sudden as Niskanen, looked very strong with the Flyers and was a major piece in the defence core. Nobody really knew why Niskanen abruptly retired, but fans were finally given somewhat of an answer. Thanks to Ian Laperriere.
Nasty Knuckles Podcast interviewed Ian Laperriere, who addressed why Matt Niskanen retired, as the answer is quite underwhelming.

Niskanen, leaving may have been the downfall for the Flyers back end, since his retirement the team hasn't been the same.
