For the entire season, it has not been a secret that the Philadelphia Flyers have struggled on the power play. The Flyers currently rank dead last in the NHL on the man advantage and it has been a massive contributor to some ugly losses and has been holding the Flyers back from going to a good team, to a great team. After the Flyers narrowly beat the lowly San Jose Sharks 3-2 on Tuesday night, Flyers coach Rocky Thompson was extremely honest about the Flyers power play struggles down the stretch.
Last night, the Flyers went one for four on the power play, with their lone power play goal coming by Morgan Frost in the second period that gave the Flyers a 2-1 lead. After missing out on three opportunities, coach Rocky Thompson who is filling in for John Tortorella during his two game suspension, gave an interesting answer when asked about the struggles.
"Well, our PP stinks, & he was a good PP guy at one point in his career. It's not gonna hurt our PP, because it's no good anyway."
This was in response to making some changes in the power play line by placing Denis Gurianov in the lineup to see if maybe that could light a spark in the ice cold power play for the Flyers.
Currently, the Flyers are 32nd in the league in the power play, converting on just 12.9% of power play's this season, scoring just 27 power play goals on the year. Coincidentally, the Flyers are the best in the NHL when down a man, as they are among the best in the NHL in kill percentage with an 84% kill rate as well as 31 shorthanded goals on the year.
With the standings getting tighter and tighter as 16 games remain in the regular season, could the Flyers power play struggles cost them a shot at the playoffs?
