"The Philadelphia Flyers and general manager Ron Hextall will be big players on the free agent market if they want to be. The team only has $57million dedicated to 17 players for the 2018-19 season which gives the team plenty of wiggle room come the NHL Draft or NHL free agency. Hextall has already stated that he's likely not going to retain any of his unrestricted free agents like Matt Read, Valtteri Filppula and Johnny Oduya, the team might look at keeping Brandon Manning while Robert Hagg, Taylor Leier, Samuel Morin, Alex Lyon and Anthony Stolarz are restricted free agents. If Hextall wants to go for a home run type offer to John Tavares or John Carlson, he'll have plenty of room to do so as various reports on Sunday indicated the 2018-19 NHL salary cap is expected to go up to $80million. That jump gives the Flyers and Hextall an extra $5million to play with come summer time and we'll see if Hextall decides to do anything with it, or keep it for the NHL trade deadline.
Bill Daly says the current projection for the salary cap is around $80 million, up $5 million from this season; however the NHL still needs to negotiate the growth factor with the NHLPA later in June so there's no hard number quite yet.
